+ Herbal First Aid Kit -- Class INFO

Hi again!

I’m back. Feels right.

In my neck of the woods, Spring has begun – and it’s off with a gallop! The timing (or should I say, phenology, a new word I picked up from the Idaho Master Naturalists program) is about 4 weeks ahead of ‘normal.’ On my wall calendar, I’ll often note when the first robin appears to me, or when the sagebrush buttercup blooms bright yellow, or when the geese leave and arrive. This year? Wowzers, everything is wonky and ridiculously early.

Anyhoo, this is a catch-up and info email.

Catch-up:

I might write more about these past two months whereby I paused this publication and reduced social media consumption/engagement. Am considering the title: The Year the Robins Never Left. Late in January, I quit my job. Rather dramatically, by my standards. The next day Bun Bun, our pet (okay, my pet) rabbit was murdered by a neighborhood dog in the backyard. It was a combination of faults. That hurt.

Within days I heard the whispered words: go back to the Plants.

Yep! Let’s do that. That feels right and good—safe. I reached out to my former employer, Brady’s Plant Ranch and asked if they’d hire me back. They said yes! So, that’s where I’ll be this Spring/early Summer. Come on over, visit and peruse the great selection of herbs, flowers (annual & perennial) and veggies too of course; fruit trees, ornamental trees & shrubs; also, bare-root strawberry crowns and raspberry canes (only available in early April)— all your garden needs, from fertilizer to potting soil, all available from a friendly and informative staff!

Opening April 6^th ~ Monday-Saturday, 9-6pm.

My own garden is coming along nicely. Tidied up the Fairy House, noticed that the nearby highbush cranberry has made it through another winter here. Dug up some motherwort and other organically grown herbs that I’ll have for sale here in a bit. Perennials are popping up, I even planted snap peas! It’s the earliest I’ve ever planted them…February 27^th!!

Now, yes, that’s a gamble. But the signs I use to know when to plant peas were all accounted for. I could have gone a week earlier, but chose to wait. We do have a snap cold front moving in today/tonight, but they haven’t yet sprouted, so I think I’m in the clear for this stretch of cold at least.

Yesterday, however, was barefoot weather – I love this time of year when the earth is saturated, cool and energizing. Warm breezes, golden sunshine. Crocuses. Mountain blue birds. Sandhill crane chortles and blooming violas.
